DAN HARTLEY
A life shaped by nature
My childhood in Derbyshire was spent outdoors, climbing trees, swimming in lakes, and exploring the countryside. Those early experiences left a lasting impression and sparked a lifelong connection to the natural world, especially the beauty and structure of woodlands.
Before garden design, I worked in civil engineering. But over time, I felt the pull toward something more creative and rooted in nature. I left the construction industry in 2010 and began working as a tree surgeon and landscape gardener, first in London, then Norfolk. Those years were formative, giving me a strong foundation in arboriculture and horticulture, and a deep respect for the craft of working with land and plants.
It was through this hands-on work that I discovered my true passion: landscape and garden design. I trained at KLC School of Design, graduating with distinction, and was fortunate to go on to work with acclaimed designers Adolfo Harrison and Marcus Barnett. Their mentorship helped shape my approach and taught me how to bring structure, atmosphere and personality into a space.
Today, I run my own business, designing gardens in Hertfordshire, London, Essex, Buckinghamshire and beyond. Each project is a collaboration — drawing on my clients’ tastes, the needs of the site, and the rhythms of the natural world. My aim is always the same: to create spaces that feel grounded, welcoming, and alive.
When I’m not designing for others, you’ll find me in my own garden — digging, dreaming, or just sitting with a cup of tea, noticing what’s changed with the seasons.

PHILOSPOHY
Genius Loci
At Dan Hartley Gardens, our design philosophy centres on the principle of Genius Loci — the spirit of a place. We believe every garden should feel as though it truly belongs, honouring the unique character of the site while reflecting the personality and aspirations of the people who live there. By working with what’s already present — the land, local materials, and surrounding environment — we create spaces that are authentic, sustainable, and timeless. This approach means your garden isn’t just beautiful to look at, but deeply connected to its setting and to you, becoming a natural extension of your home and life.
